Thumbs up Intel Turbo Memory + Advanced Format HDD in Windows 7 **SOLUTION**
Synopsis
I just got my shiny new Western Digital Scorpio Black WD5000BPKT hard drive today. It's an advanced format drive, meaning it uses 4KB sectors and Windows 7 does 512KB sector emulation with it. My laptop already has the a 2GB Intel Turbo Memory module upgrade. It worked great with my old 120GB 7200rpm drive boosting performance noticeably (the bad press with Turbo Memory was from the 1GB versions which wasn't large enough to cache effectively). Performance even with this modern 7200rpm drive was noticeably improved. Things seemed to be working great after the driver install, then the problems started happening....

Symptoms
1) Some drivers failed to install, such as the Sigmatel audio drivers and the Toshiba Bluetooth stack. Windows would pop up errors complaining about unsigned drivers when they ARE signed drivers and worked fine before under the old drive (also running Windows 7)!
2) Opening Device Manager (for example) caused UAC notifications to pop up despite UAC settings left at default. This never happened before and not on any other computer running Windows 7 with the default UAC settings.
3) Windows Defender stopped working. It says there's a problem with the Windows Defender service. It's running on bootup but crashes as soon as you started the Windows Defender application.
4) Windows Update broke. Error says Windows Update service not running (but it is!)
5) Standalone hotfixes and .NET 4.0 client installer broke and gave 0xc8000247 errors.
6) System File Checker (sfc /scannow) found errors but unable to correct them all.

Solution
You won't find one elsewhere. Google "0xc8000247" and you'll eventually come across some threads on other forums saying that the problem was caused by the Intel Turbo Memory drivers and that updating to newer Intel SATA drivers fixes it. Updating to the new drivers sounds like an easy fix but what happens is the latest 10.8.0.1003 (as of time of writing) breaks the Turbo Memory functionality. Intel removed compatibility with the Turbo Memory drivers in newer versions. The people who posted those solutions didn't care about losing Turbo Memory, so yes, that's the easy way out and I wasn't going to give up! Don't even try to install Hotfix KB982018 thinking that will work without needing to update the SATA drivers. First of all, you can't install it with the Turbo Memory drivers installed. Second of all, even if you installed it before installing the Turbo Memory drivers, it will break things even more! So don't do it!!!

I noticed that there seemed to be a huge gap in version numbers for the Intel drivers. 8.9.1023 was the drivers bundled with the latest official version 1.10.0.1012 Turbo Memory drivers, but there's no small incremental versions to try between those 8.9.1023 SATA drivers and the 10.x ones on Intel's website. I saw there's 9.6.x drivers on Intel's website, but they're RAID only. So I thought there has to be something in between. So Google time again! Not 5 minutes later, I found OEM Intel Matrix Storage drivers version 8.9.8.1005 on HP's website. I installed it and while it wiped out the shortcut to the Intel Turbo Memory Console, it was still working! Further tests showed that all of the weird behaviors in Windows were all gone!

Yes! Windows Updates works again! Windows Defender works again! No more unexpected UAC notices!

EDIT: I found that there is yet an even newer Turbo Memory driver. It is the OEM Lenovo one! Instructions are now modified to reflect this.

So steps to make this work (easy/messy way):
1) Ensure you have the latest Turbo Memory drivers installed. The latest/last version is 1.10.1.1002. You can download it from Lenovo. If you don't have the latest version installed, install it first before continuing. These are OEM Lenovo drivers and includes newer (but not latest) version 8.9.2.1002 Matrix Storage Drivers.
2) Backup the Intel Turbo Memory Console shortcut. Just click on "Start" -> "All Programs", then right click on the "Intel Turbo Memory" folder in the list and click "Copy". Then paste it anywhere temporarily, such as the Desktop.
3) Download the last Intel Matrix Storage drivers (newer ones are called "Rapid Storage Technology") from HP and install it.
4) Restore the Intel Turbo Memory Console shortcut. Move the folder you copied minutes ago back into the Start Menu.
5) Verify Windows functionality and Turbo Memory functionality. None of the above problems should occur. Device Manager should show an "IMD-0" disk drive and a "Intel Turbo Memory" storage controller. Open the Properties of your HDD and you should see that Windows thinks it is a hybrid drive as there should be an "NV Cache" tab.

Clean/integrated install method:
1) Download the latest Turbo Memory drivers. The latest/last version is 1.10.1.1002. You can download it from Lenovo. These are OEM Lenovo drivers and includes newer (but not latest) version 8.9.2.1002 Matrix Storage Drivers. Run the exe. By default, it will extract the files to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\Turbomem. Let it extract the file to wherever you want and follow through it till it finishes extracting the files. You should then see "Install Intel(R) Turbo Memory Driver for Windows Vista/7 now". Uncheck it and click Finish.
2) Download the last Intel Matrix Storage drivers (newer ones are called "Rapid Storage Technology") from HP and run the exe. Let it extract the files. By default, it will extract the files to C:\swsetup\SP48491. Once it finishes extracting the file, it will automatically start the Intel Matrix Storage Driver Installshield Wizard. Click CANCEL as soon as you see it. And yes, you are sure you want to cancel the installation! If you have WinRAR, open the exe instead of running it. More on step 3...
3) Go to C:\swsetup\SP48491 (or wherever you extracted the Intel Matrix Storage Drivers to) copy ONLY THE FOLDERS to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\Turbomem\DRV (or wherever you extracted the Turbo Memory drivers to). If you have opened the exe file directly with WinRAR in step 2, extract ONLY THE FOLDERS to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\Turbomem\DRV (or wherever you extracted the Turbo Memory drivers to).
4) Both the latest Turbo Memory and Matrix Storage drivers are now merged together. You can now run the setup.exe in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\Turbomem\DRV (or wherever you extracted the Turbo Memory drivers to). Of course, now you can make a backup of these drivers so you don't have to do this again! All you need is the contents of the "DRV" folder. You don't need the other files the Lenovo self-extractor program unpacked!

Conclusion
With a little extra effort, you can continue to enjoy the benefits of Intel Turbo Memory (especially if you splurged for the 4GB card) and also the big performance improvement from an Advanced Format HDD.
The slightly newer driver was all that was needed to make everything work properly again. It's not that the older driver wasn't Advanced Format compatible, but it wasn't completely compatible because running "fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo C:" in an elevated privilege command prompt yielded positive results, reporting the drive has 4096 bytes per sector. If the driver wasn't compatible at all, it would have errored out and not give you any results at all!

Please report of success or failures! It will be good to know!
